States are pushing AI rules into the schoolhouse, fast

As of June 2026, 35+ states have official AI guidance from their departments of education. FutureEd is tracking 68 bills across 27 states this legislative session, with 10 already enacted in 2026 alone. The federal Department of Education finalized its AI grant-priority rule on April 13, 2026, and proposals that integrate AI literacy into teaching and learning practices to improve student outcomes are weighted more heavily. The policy trendline is plain enough: privacy, parental engagement, transparency, academic integrity, and professional development are no longer side quests.

The real AI question in classrooms is culture, not just catching kids

A classroom AI integrity piece frames the core dilemma simply: if a student copies from ChatGPT and doesn’t disclose it, is it cheating? If another student uses AI for grammar suggestions, is that OK? These aren’t just policy questions—they’re culture questions, with the emphasis on building trust, transparency, and ethical AI use. The point is clear: it’s about coaching students.
