Schools are being told to keep AI policy on a short leash and keep revisiting it
Oregon’s K-12 guidance says the federal and state regulatory landscape related to youth online safety, data privacy, and artificial intelligence continues to evolve, and districts should plan for ongoing review and periodic updates of local policies and guidance. It also says schools and districts engaging with genAI technologies should regularly review company usage and privacy policies, and work with IT, procurement, and legal counsel so vendor agreements clearly define expectations for data collection, use, retention, security, and third-party sharing.

One New York district says AI is changing everything, so the rules have to stay flexible
Central Islip Union Free School District says artificial intelligence, including generative artificial intelligence, is rapidly changing teaching, learning, communication, and school operations. The district says its policy is intended to provide clear, official, and immediate rules for responsible use until additional district guidance, regulation, and approved resources are adopted, and that the policy is a living district document. Faculty and staff are expected to revisit district AI resources, policies, support materials, and opportunities for updates on a regular basis.
Gobble's Take: When a district calls the policy a living document, the important part is the living—not the document.
