Undergravel filters: old-school, simple, and still very much a thing
Undergravel filters were long used in marine aquariums and have enjoyed a surge in popularity in freshwater tanks in the past decade as the importance of the nitrogen cycle has become apparent. They can minimize ammonia and nitrite levels, are simple and inexpensive to install, and still need proper setup and maintenance to keep working well over the long term.
