215 cases and counting — Australia's H5 tally keeps climbing, including a mass mortality event of about 80 birds near Cape Jaffa.
Australia's H5 bird flu is running out of map to stay off of
H5 was first detected in Australia on 20 June in a migratory brown skua in Western Australia. Six weeks later, it had reached five states. Confirmed detections marched upward — 28 at the end of July, then 33, then 52, then 53 confirmed or presumed positive, with South Australia holding 39 of those alone. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's latest national figure stands at 215. Western Australia sits at 10, with no new detections this week. Victoria joined the list on Thursday after a crested tern turned up near the South Australian border, and six more suspected cases followed in the state's south-west within days.
Gobble's Take: A migratory bird does not check a map before it lands. Outbreak trackers do — which is the whole point.

US cyclosporiasis has cleared 20,000 cases — and that's still the low end
The nationwide cyclosporiasis count is now more than 20,000 for the year, and that figure is almost certainly an undercount: many people with milder symptoms never seek care at all. The total is expected to keep rising. Multiple outbreaks are active, and the largest — centered in Michigan — is still working through a backlog of investigations. On the lettuce front, the contaminated supply appears to be out of circulation, with several metrics, including test positivity, declining quickly.
Gobble's Take: The official count is a floor, not a ceiling. The honest number is the one still being counted.

A separate Salmonella outbreak is spreading across 27 states — and jalapeños are the culprit
Fresh jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico, are now linked to a Salmonella outbreak with 345 people sick across 27 states and 36 hospitalized. Two cases carry antibiotic-resistant strains. Chipotle and Qdoba pulled the supplier's peppers, and the recall has since expanded downstream to prepared foods from Taylor Farms, Ready Meals, Meal Simple, Higher Harvest, and Deli Kitchen.
Gobble's Take: It was jalapeños this time. The ingredient nobody reads on the label is always the one worth reading.
