42 games behind Oklahoma City last season, Utah still walked into the draft and took Darryn Peterson at No. 2.

Utah grabs Darryn Peterson at No. 2 while trying to close the Thunder gap

Darryn Peterson couldn’t hide it, his grandfather was crying, and then Peterson got emotional too after Utah took him with the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft. The Jazz are clearly betting on the fit: Peterson joins Keyonte George as Utah tries to climb out of a Northwest Division where Oklahoma City just got bigger with Aday Mara and added more shooting with Bennett Stirtz. Meanwhile, Denver keeps shedding draft rights and keeps staring at the same summer headaches: Aaron Gordon’s health, Peyton Watson’s next contract, and Nikola Jokic’s looming supermax extension.

Warriors’ draft-room drama ends with Yaxel Lendeborg at No. 11

Mike Dunleavy and Joe Lacob had what can only be called an animated discussion moments before Golden State made its No. 11 pick, which is exactly the kind of pre-pick theater that makes a draft feel like a hostage negotiation with better lighting. Dunleavy later downplayed the moment, joked about arguing over the best golf course in San Francisco, and said the Warriors were ultimately on the same page when they landed Michigan star Yaxel Lendeborg. Golden State says trade talk never got close, and Dunleavy’s message was simple: at No. 11, they were going to get a good player. Lendeborg arrives after averaging 15.1 points and 6.8 rebounds and winning Big Ten Player of the Year honors, with the Warriors still sitting in the awkward in-between of a missed-playoffs season, an aging core, and the end-of-an-era vibe hanging over Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.

Round 1 turned into a Giannis trade machine, with 9 deals in the final 18 picks

The first round started quietly on Tuesday night through the first 12 picks, then the trades began at No. 13 involving the teams that were part of the massive swap agreed to on Monday sending Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee to Miami. That was the first of 9 trades involving 10 players over the final 18 selections, because apparently the back half of the round decided to become a full-time recycling program for draft rights. Memphis was busy too, sliding back five spots and picking up five future second-round selections across two deals. Because none of the trades can be finalized until July 6, the paperwork still has to catch up to the chaos.
