Texas farmland fights turn local โ fast
Pete Sessions, R-Texas, is behind federal legislation to create voluntary "Agriculture Freedom Zones" that would steer large developments toward marginal land rather than productive farmland. Greg Abbott, a Republican who struck a $40 billion Google deal, backs such projects for the jobs and revenue they bring. The tension is already touching down: Hill County recently became one of the first in the state to enact a temporary ban, a sign that rural Central Texas communities on prime farmland are the ones left holding the question.
